The Boy and the Drum

Shristi busy making pictures
(This story is illustrated by one of my students Neujan Shrestha. It's his reward that I am sharing his write-up in my blog. Actually this was a long story in the form of dialogues, sent by Pratham Books Publication, India for 'One day One Story Project'. This time I wanted to let them enjoy with the pictures as my new grade seven enjoy making pictures.)

Activities;
First Day
1. First teacher shares the half of the story with some outlines. (I thought the story was easy and children could guess it easily, so only shared half of the story and rest they were let to imagine and surprisingly they guessed the original story.)
2. Then, they were divided into groups according to the scene of the story, with clear instruction about what they need to draw.
3. Then, they were given the instruction and some needed materials like papers and colors.
4. The students started drawing.
Second Day
1. Share the instructions about presenting the story.
2. Ask the other students to listen complete story carefully so that they had to write it later on.
3. Ask each group to present the story.
4. Then, after presentation, stick the pictures on wall in sequence.
5. Finally, let them write stories themselves.

Note; Everyone had written in their own words as instructed, but among them I had chose Neujan's Story.

Plot
Once upon a time there was a big village and there lived a family. In that family there was a son and his mother. They were very poor.  Although they were poor they were very helpful and innocent and they lived happily.

One day the mother was going to city for buying goods and his mother asked, "What do you want my son?" And son said," I want a drum, mother. " Mother went for buying goods and there wasn't enough money left to buy drum. She was very worried and took one piece of wood for her son. Her son was intelligent, he took that piece of wood happily. And he roamed around the village by singing song playing that wood. He found an old man trying to cook food, but he didn't have wood. He gave him that piece of wood and that old man gave him a piece of bread in return. He again started to roam the village and he saw a mother whose baby was crying because baby was very hungry and he gave that piece of bread to the child and the mother gave her a big pot in return as she was a potter. He restarted to sing song and started roaming the village. He saw a washer man scolding his wife because his wife broke the only pot. So the boy gave his pot. The man was happy and he gave a coat to him in return. Then he again started roaming singing about his coat.He found a man half naked who was robbed by robbers. The boy gave his coat to that man. The man also became happy and gave his horse to him. He again went to roam village and saw one bridegroom with his group. They were sad because  the horseman had not arrived. So the boy gives him his horse and in return the bridegroom asked, "What do you need?" He looked around and saw a musical band which had drum. He asked for the drum. Bridegroom gave him drum and the boy was happy and was playing ht drum with his friends all over the village.

Moral: If we try to fulfill other's need, our need will also be fulfilled.
